Whilst drawing inspiration and feeling from the Romantic tradition, Andy Waite’s contemporary landscapes are essentially expressionistic in form and energy.
The English land and skyscapes in all their elemental power are celebrated and given poignant, poetic resonance on canvas. With a passion for spontaneous brushwork, the balance of harmony between the still and the ever changing is sought in each individual piece.
These paintings are made from a combination of swiftly made sketches on location and drawings from photographs taken on walks and journeys both close to home and further afield.
The dynamic play of light and darkness in nature are mirrored by the emotions driving the painting process as the artist reflects and reimagines both the gentle and tumultuous landscapes of earth and soul.
“I work in a fairly abstracted way which certainly expresses at least some of my own thought patterns. What appeals to me most in art are the things that seep into the consciousness slowly, that aren’t obvious, that perhaps you only get a suggestion of initially, but which at the same time intrigue and move you to explore further, while
also giving you a deeper perception of what it is to be human and alive on Earth. With these paintings I hope to share something of this experience.”
