Two extreme and opposing elements that nonetheless coexist. Their colours, moods and textures blending together on a sea shore; or the relentless slamming of wave against rock. Earthen forms grow out of the sea, yet the sea grinds down the earth…. grinds without end. To walk the shore or cliff line is to walk between worlds.
The Land with its layers of time, an ageless fundament, solid yet unstable; the Sea shifting, restless, wild, calm, beautiful, and ultimately terrifying.
Captivated by its majesty, I have returned throughout my painting career to the subject of coastline, engaging again and again with Cornwall, the islands of the Hebrides, and now Northumberland and the Jurassic Dorset coast.
These familiar yet wild places evoke a strong response in me as I tread their paths, a response I capture and record when I return to my studio to draw and set down in paint these spaces between worlds.
