Overview
Maevaughn Chiu is an abstract artist. Her paintings use biomorphic forms and colour to create a feeling/sensation.
She creates idiosyncratic compositions that focus on the relationships of the forms and colours in order to notice the thoughts that arise from looking.
Compositions draw on memories and connections she has felt to artists, design movements and places. Elements of surrealism, modernism, postmodernism, The Bauhaus, tribal art, anime art, among other influences creep into her work. Quite often capturing the feeling of a time in her life, having had an atypical upbringing, living between South Sudan and a West Yorkshire village in the 80s.
The shapes she paints are pulled from a diverse range of aesthetics. From modernist art that she grew up with, to forms she associates with her time living in Africa, Asia and Canada. Her early training in hand drawn technical drawing also fostered a love of line drawing.
The interconnectedness of history, relationships, the environment, and the flow of energy through everything is important.
For Maevaughn painting is meditative, taking her to a tranquil inner space. The repetitive lines and soft fades communicate a sense of calm contemplation to reflect on.
Her work is part of private collections in the UK, Europe, the USA and Canada.
