OVERVIEW
Overview
Jane trained at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, graduating in Ceramics and Three-Dimensional Design in 1973.
She has continued developing her own work since then, alongside a career in teaching. Now retired from teaching, she relishes the time to explore new ideas and concepts.
The natural world has always been at the root of her inspiration. A keen walker and lover of the great outdoors, she instinctively connects with her surroundings. When walking along the coast she is especially inspired by the cliffs and rock formations. Weather and its impact on the environment, the power of the elements and the sea, erosion and decay – all serve to inspire. It seems only natural that the elements of earth, water, air and fire should come together in response to these wild, natural places.
Through direct experience and memory, Jane’s work reveals a fascination for textural surface qualities and edges.
She is excited by the colour variations and effects that can be achieved through complex layers of treatment, using a range of clay bodies, slips, oxides and glazes.
Pieces are usually fired twice, but sometimes additional firings are necessary before they are considered ‘ready’.
