Overview

Christine Cloos, born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, has lived in Giverny for thirty years.

She has participated in many exhibitions, individual or collective in Paris and abroad: Matthieu Dubuc Gallery in Rueil-Malmaison, Paris, Plexus Gallery in Montreux, Switzerland, Rudolv Gallery in Amsterdam, Holland, Be-Espace Gallery in Paris, Guimet Museum Bookstore in Paris, Monet-Marmottan Kitagawa Garden Museum, Japan, Marine Art Show in Paris, Espace 87 Gallery in Giverny.

After working in the Genovesio-Malesset painting restoration workshop in Paris, then for Historical Monuments (restoration of wall paintings of churches, castles) and followed modeling courses with Serge Block, at the Montparnasse school , she participates in the creation of sets for advertising, theater, cinema while continuing, in parallel, a personal work of oil painting in glaze on wooden panels.

In 1991, she moved to Giverny and took the support of iron, cut and welded sheets, assembled into wall sculptures and reworked in oil glaze and gold leaf, to create series about Water, Fire, and Trees, a sort of iron calligraphy of the tree branch, in a play of full and empty, shadow and light, until 2013.

In 2006, parallel work on canvas, collage of various papers and oil painting took place. She abandoned sculpture to devote herself solely to this work on canvas. It addresses the theme of landscapes, the plains between sky and earth, then, trees, and more particularly birches, and then flowerbeds. The
proximity of Claude Monet’s garden led her to explore flower beds, this organized and structured jumble, this corrected, polished and yet powerful
nature, overflowing with almost uncontrollable energy.

In this year 2023, she once again addresses the theme of trees but this time, in a landscape. “I do not seek to paint a landscape as it is in reality, I paint the feelings it evokes, the emotion that it produces and of which I try to rediscover a trace.”

“When I begin a collage, I let my intuition go – the imprint in me made by a landscape, a light, a season, a blade of grass, a feeling – without the help of
reasoning. I allow for spontaneity. And I make use of accidents, the effects of the material that happen by chance and little by little, patiently, I redirect
everything towards this initial idea glimpsed in an intuitive way but which is always the unifying thread. In the end, it is a balance between impulse and
self-control.”
