Alex paints primarily with oil on board, in his studio in Arundel, West Sussex.
In choosing his subjects he is influenced by the Welsh painter Kyffin Williams’ advice to an aspiring
artist ‘Paint what you love’. This could mean a still life, a scene from nature, a family member, a
social situation, his whippet – the list goes on.
Alongside form and texture, colour is important to Alex, both within his pictures and on their frames.
He uses tertiary colours, with a good deal of titanium white, and usually hand paints frames with a
shade from each work.
He is a keen collector of vintage objects, particularly mid 20th century glass, ceramics, jewellery and
and furniture, and often thinks of paintings in their role as objects. He has a strong interest in where
they might be hung and what they could complement.
Alex has exhibited in London, Chichester and Arundel. He studied fine art and the history of art as a
mature student at Camberwell College of Arts. Aside from painting, Alex has worked as a theatre
manager, teacher, vintage object dealer, gardener and in conservation.
